The name "clematis" comes from the Greek word "klema", meaning the climbing type of plants. The flower growers of our country call this plant "clematis", which is due to the too strong smell of its root.

It is not difficult to take care of the plant, and the main principle of proper cultivation is to comply with the timing of planting, transplanting and reproduction in spring or autumn.

General information

In Russia, clematis appeared only in the early nineteenth century and for a long time was grown as a greenhouse plant. The process of more active work on the reproduction and cultivation of these plants occurred in the middle of the twentieth century. Despite a fairly high level of adaptation to our climatic conditions, clematis, like most plants, in the autumn needs to be prepared for the upcoming winter period.

Florists should pay particular attention to the following points regarding the autumn care of clematis:

  • when it will be better, and most importantly, how to properly plant the plants in the fall;
  • when and how to properly perform clematis transplantation in the autumn period;
  • when and in what way is it best to reproduce this plant in the autumn months;
  • when and what to perform standard clematis care activities in the fall.

You can take as a basis an already prepared, clearly structured technology, which is developed taking into account the biological characteristics of the plant. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the climatic and natural features of the region, which will make it possible to adjust the stages of care as efficiently as possible, as well as the timing of planting and replanting.

Plant Care in Autumn

Clematis care for the winter has some differences from spring events. The complex of procedures includes watering, as well as fertilizing and pruning, which should be done on certain types of plants.

If the soil is very dry, then clematis can be moderately watered. It is best to limit the plant to watering, so that it goes on winter holidays as smoothly as possible. The last potassium-phosphorus top dressing should be done in the final decade of summer. However, under favorable growing conditions, in September clematis can be fed with potassium sulfate and superphosphate.

How to prepare clematis for winter

Clematis planting in open ground

It is best to plant clematis in September: the plant will have time to take root and adapt to the ground before winter cold. You can buy seedlings at a later date, but in this case the plant should be left for wintering in the basement. Shoots appearing on clematis should be pinched.

Clematis can grow in the ground on one site for almost thirty years, which implies a careful selection of a landing place. In the southern regions, it is not recommended to plant these flowers in the ground in too sunny areas, and also close to the walls of the building or fences.

Clematis is quite loyal to the composition of the soil, however, it is best to use non-acidic soil with a ph level of less than 6.5. In addition, you should pay attention to the depth of groundwater, since such plants can not be planted in swampy soil. The optimal distance between the bushes should not be less than one meter.

Planting clematis in autumn and spring has several differences from planting other plants. Clematis should be planted with a fairly significant deepening. Not only the root neck of the plant is subject to deepening, but also the lowest pair of buds that are located on the shoot. This method of planting significantly improves survival, and also increases the bushiness of the plant and facilitates the care of it.

The landing pit must have a depth of at least two bayonet garden shovels. The soil should be nutritious and have in its composition such components as humus, sod land, peat and sand, in equal proportions. You can add a couple of glasses of wood ash and complex fertilizers for flowering plants to the soil mixture.

When planting or transplanting in the winter, the aerial part of the plant should be cut, leaving only a couple of buds.

Clematis transplant: when to transplant to another place

If necessary, carry out the clematis transfer to a new place, it should be remembered that in the autumn such a procedure is better to perform than in the spring. The plant should be transplanted no later than September.

Young bushes of clematis easier to tolerate such a procedure. Older plants adapt harder. In addition, you can not wait for flowering the next summer after transplanting. Old clematis have a long and powerful root system, which is almost impossible to extract from the soil without damage. It is permissible to excavate the root system when digging out, but this should be done as carefully as possible. If the transplant is not carried out in the spring, but the shoots need to be cut at the level of two buds.

Sometimes the cause of the transplant is a plant disease. In this case, the root system of the bush extracted from the ground should be thoroughly washed from the soil, and the landing pit in a new place should be treated with Trichoflor. After landing, the soil around clematis should be thoroughly sprinkled with ash.

Breeding methods

The process of breeding clematis can be carried out not only in the spring, but also in the winter. It is advisable to use such methods for this purpose:

  • division of plant bushes;
  • breeding through autumn layering.

The division of clematis is not particularly difficult, and the way it is carried out largely depends on the age of the bush.

Young plants

The age of the plant should be no more than six years. The excavated root system must be thoroughly but gently washed from the ground and cut into several parts, which will have well-formed roots and a couple of shoots.

Old plants

Clematis over 6 years old are considered old, but they are also capable of successful reproduction. It is necessary to dig up plants on one side and with a hose, rinse well the exposed part of the root system. Next, cut off part of the root with shoots and cut the shoots available on the part to a couple of buds.

Quite often practiced breeding clematis with the help of autumn layering. This method is the simplest and is characterized by a high level of productivity. The method consists in digging the soil of plant shoots, which within one year form independent bushes from internodes to be transplanted.

Propagation of clematis using cuttings in the autumn period it belongs to the category of the most physiological and safest for the plant events. The method consists in cutting from shoots of lignified cuttings with the presence of one internode. All cuttings need to be treated with phytohormones, and then planted in planting boxes filled with loose soil substrate.

Cuttings are deepened by the lower end by three centimeters. Boxes with cuttings should be placed in the basement. The soil substrate should be inspected periodically and maintained in a moist state. In early spring, discolored sprouts form on the cuttings, and the boxes should be transferred to the greenhouse structure, where a gradual increase in temperature is carried out and soil moisture is maintained.

If the shoots reached ten centimeters, then pinching them is performed, which activates the formation of the root system. It takes about three months to root, after which the seedlings are transferred for planting in open ground.

How to plant clematis

Clematis, like many other plants, need special attention in the autumn. If you carry out all the measures to care for clematis correctly, then next year they will delight you with beautiful plentiful flowering.
